During my Peace Corps service I made trips into the capital of Apia to buy fruits and vegetables at the market, and do other shopping I needed. This video was taken on October 8, 2011, the Saturday before White Sunday. White Sunday is a day that celebrates the kids, and gives them the chance to say prayers, and perform songs and skits at church, before receiving several candy necklaces and sometimes, even ice cream!! This Saturday is typically the busiest shopping day of the year for Samoans.

American Samoa is classified as an unincorporated, unorganized territory of the United States. Basically, this means American Samoa enjoys diplomatic and military protection from the US, but not all of the provisions and protections of the US Constitution apply. As an unincorporated territory of the United States, American Samoa citizens classify as US Nationals, not US citizens. Most US Nationals consist of citizens of American Samoa. 2. American Samoa consists of five volcanic islands (Tutuila, Aunu'u, and the Manu'a islands of Ofu, Olosega, and Ta'u) and two coral atolls (Rose and Swains atolls). The entire territory of American Samoa consists of 117,500 square miles (30,400 square km), which is about the size of Oregon or New Zealand. However, only 76.1 square miles (197 square km), or 0.1% of the territory, is actually dry land. 3. During the deadly worldwide outbreak of influenza in 1918, the United States enforced strict quarantine regulations in American Samoa, protecting the islands and the people from the disease. New Zealand, however, who at the time held control of the Independent State of Samoa, did not enforce a quarantine, resulting in the death of 8,500, or 22% of the population in the western Samoan islands. American Samoa became one of only three places in the world (the others being New Caledonia and Marajó island in Brazil) to have prevented any deaths during the pandemic through the quick response from Governor John Martin Poyer after hearing news reports of the outbreak on the radio and requesting quarantine ships from the U.S. mainland. 4. American Samoa has a population of 54,343 for the year 2015. Tutuila island has 48,000 people alone, making up about 88% of the total population. Pago Pago is the capital of American Samoa. 5. American Samoa's waters were used as a splash landing for US astronauts during the moon landings in the 60s and 70s. A small American Samoa flag was sent to the moon on one of the missions, and later presented along with three moon rocks to American Samoa by US President Richard Nixon. 6. Weather stations detect rain 300 days out of 365 each year in American Samoa. 7. Fa'asamoa, or the Samoa way of life, still dominates the way American Samoans live. Villages center around the family, and the Matai, family chief, dictates the community activities. In addition, 90% of American Samoa land is communally owned by the Samoan families. Pago Pago, Tutuila, American Samoa 2017 , Pago Pago Samoan touristic village, FagotogoTutuila, Mount Alava, Leone church, Fatu rock, Fagotogo Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Pago Pago is the capital city of American Samoa. In the Samoan language it is pronounced "Pahngo-Pahngo". Pago Pago is the territorial capital of American Samoa. It is on the main island of American Samoa, Tutuila. The territory is served by Pago Pago International Airport at Tafuna, some 8 miles south west of Pago Pago. Tourism, entertainment, food, and tuna canning are its main industries. The area commonly referred to as Pago Pago consists of a string of villages, each with its own village council, on the shores of Pago Pago Harbor. One of the villages is itself named Pago Pago, and in 2010 had a population of 3,656. Pago Pago may refer to the village, to the bay area or to American Samoa as a whole. The constituent villages are, in order, Utulei, Fagatogo, Malaloa, Pago Pago, Satala and Atu'u. Fagatogo is the area referred to as Town and was the seat of government until a new Executive Office Building was opened in Utulei. In Fagatoto is the Fono (Legislature), the Police Department, the Port of Pago Pago, many shops and hotels. Tourism --------------- Until 1980, one could experience the view of Mt. Avala by taking an aerial tramway over the harbor, but on April 17 of that year a U.S. Navy plane, flying overhead as part of the Flag Day celebrations, struck the cable; the plane crashed into a wing of the Rainmaker Hotel.[10] The tramway was repaired, but closed not long after. The tram remains unusable, although according to Lonely Planet, plans have been put forth to reopen it, but in December 2010 the cable was damaged by Tropical Cyclone Wilma, fell into the harbor and has not been repaired. Another noted view is that from the top of the pass above Aua Village on the road to Afono.[citation needed] The Sadie Thompson Inn, on the outskirts of Pago Pago, is a hotel and restaurant that is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. See in Pago Pago, American Samoa --------------------------------------- Jean P. Haydon Museum. A museum that showcases Samoan history, culture, and nature, it's a great place to learn about the island and become acquainted with the local culture before venturing out to other destinations. The museum features many cultural artifacts, such as clothing, art, weaponry, pottery, and tattooing. There are also artifacts from WWII. Exhibits about the island itself, including the types of plants and animals are also on display. The museum is named after the wife of the founder, who collected many of the artifacts on display in the museum.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. The Pulemelei Mound or Star Pyramid which is Samoa’s own Ancient Pyramid, is situated on the Island of Savai’i was built between 1100-1400 AD and was no longer used by 1700-1800 AD. 2. Samoa only has one city – Apia, which is also the capital of Samoa since 1959. Apia Harbor is by far the largest and busiest harbor in Samoa. 3. In Samoa, it is acceptable for a family who has too many sons, to raise the youngest boy as a daughter. He is known as a fa’afafine and is given a girl’s name and wears feminine clothing… and is even allowed to use the ladies bathroom. A recognized gender identity/gender role since at least the early 20th century in Samoan society, and some theorize an integral part of traditional Samoan culture fa'afafine are male at birth, and explicitly embody both masculine and feminine gender traits, fashioned in a way unique to this part of the world. 4. Traditionally called Tatua, tattooing has long been a beautiful form of culture present on the island. The process of creating a true Samoan Tatua is arduous. The design is not simply something you pick from a design book, but rather is a piece of artwork that must be catered to the individual. Applying the Tatua to the skin is painstakingly time consuming and incredible difficult due to the various intricacies in the design. 5. Samoa is a traditional society governed by Fa’a Samoa (the Samoan Way) - where family is all important, respect of elders is strictly adhered to, and being of service to your family is your duty. The Samoan culture and way of life is over 3000 years old and has been preserved by the isolation of the tiny island on which it was born. 6. The traditional living quarters, or fale (houses), contain no walls and up to 20 people may sleep on the ground in the same fale. 7. Samoa’s official name is the Independent State of Samoa or Malo Sa 'oloto Tuto 'atasi o Sāmoa. The Samoan language is Polynesian, so don’t expect to understand it right from the get-go. With 510,000 people as native speakers worldwide, Samoan is the most prominent of the 40 Polynesian languages.
